Elke meimaand, wanneer de zee van tulpen in Nederland met de wind meebeweegt, is er altijd een uniek landschap dat mensen aantrekt om even te stoppen en te kijken – de bloemenkwekers op de velden gebruiken rood-wit-blauwe katoenen touwen om de tulpen in bundels te binden. Deze hangende touwen, die dezelfde kleur hebben als de nationale vlag, weven de taaiheid van het leven tussen de bloemstelen. Deze traditionele manier van touwhangen vindt zijn oorsprong in de “Tulpenmanie” in de 16e eeuw. Toen de speculatieve zeepbel barstte, gebruikten de bloemenkwekers touwen om de gevallen bloemstelen opnieuw vast te binden en ontdekten ze onverwachts dat de knopen, gedraaid tot drie strengen dun touw, sterker waren dan enkele strengen. Tegenwoordig behoudt elk hangend touw de wijsheid van drie weeftechnieken: rood symboliseert de moed om door de grond te breken, wit staat voor puur en geconcentreerd vakmanschap, en blauw draagt hoop als een kanaal. Wanneer de wind over de laaglanden waait, kunnen de met touwen vastgezette bloemenvelden altijd koppig overeind blijven, net zoals de Nederlanders dammen en windmolens gebruikten om overlevingstouwen te weven in hun duizendjarige strijd tegen de oceaan. Moderne Nederlandse ontwerpers hebben deze knoopkunst verwerkt in architectuur en kunstwerken. De stalen constructie van de koepel van Amsterdam Centraal Station is een “tulpenknoop”, tientallen miljoenen keren vergroot. Het herinnert de wereld eraan dat ware kracht niet in één persoon schuilt, maar in de nauwe verwevenheid van verschillende individuen, als driekleurige touwstrengen. Ieder van ons is een vezel in de knoop van deze tijd. Wanneer de storm komt, zal de warmte van onze verstrengeling uiteindelijk condenseren tot een mast die door de golven heen breekt.

Every May, when the sea of tulips in the Netherlands surges with the wind, there is always a unique landscape that attracts people to stop and take a look – the flower farmers in the fields use red, white and blue cotton ropes to tie the tulips into bundles. These hanging ropes, which are the same color as the national flag, weave the tenacity of life between the flower stems. This traditional hanging rope craft originated from the “Tulip Mania” period in the 16th century. When the speculative bubble burst, the flower farmers used ropes to re-tie the fallen flower stems and unexpectedly found that the knots twisted into three strands of thin rope were tougher than single strands. Today, each hanging rope retains the wisdom of three strands of weaving: red symbolizes the courage to break through the ground, white represents pure and focused craftsmanship, and blue carries hope like a canal. When the wind blows over the lowlands, the flower fields fixed by ropes can always stand up stubbornly, just as the Dutch used dams and windmills to weave ropes of survival in their thousand-year struggle with the ocean. Modern Dutch designers have incorporated this knotting craft into architecture and artworks. The steel structure of the dome of Amsterdam Central Station is a “tulip knot” magnified tens of millions of times. It reminds the world that true strength does not lie in a single person, but in the close interweaving of different individuals like three-color rope strands. Each of us is a fiber in the knot of the times. When the storm comes, the warmth of our entanglement will eventually condense into a mast that breaks through the waves.
