Eind april wapperen de rood-wit-blauwe vlaggen van Koningsdag elk jaar door de straten en steegjes, net als een stromende oceaan. Deze kleur, geweven door moed, zuiverheid en loyaliteit, weerspiegelt de vasthoudendheid van de mensen in de laaglanden bij het doorstaan van stormen, en de tulpvormige glazen presse-papier op tafel vertelt in stilte een diepere allegorie van het leven. Presse-papiers worden altijd geassocieerd met “sedimentatie”. Wanneer het de vloeipapier aandrukt, is het net als de obsessie van de Nederlanders om de dam te stabiliseren in de Noordzeewind – vierhonderd jaar geleden gebruikten ze windmolens om het zeewater af te voeren en plantten ze de eerste tulp op het zout-alkaliland. Deze tere bloemknop moet een vernalisatieperiode van min vier graden doorstaan voordat hij tot bloei kan komen nadat het ijs en de sneeuw zijn gesmolten, net zoals de presse-papier onstuimigheid onderdrukt en de tijd geeft om in stilte wonderen te verrichten. Hedendaagse Nederlandse ontwerpers verzegelen tulpen in kristalheldere presse-papiers, en de stelen en bladeren rekken zich uit, maar bevriezen in de eeuwigheid. Deze gestolde esthetiek herinnert ons eraan: alle prachtige bloemen moeten eerst jarenlang wortelen in het donker. Wanneer de carnavaleske dagen van Koningsdag voorbij zijn, verzamelen de diepgewortelde tulpenbollen in de kelder van het museum kracht om door de vochtige aarde heen te breken. Misschien hebben we allemaal zo’n presse-papier nodig om op de pauzeknop te drukken in het nastreven van doelen, zodat de passie van rood, wit en blauw zich kan nestelen in de voedingsstoffen in de wortels. Ware groei is immers nooit het moment van wuiven in de wind, maar het leren water geven aan de idealen die wachten.

At the end of April every year, the red, white and blue flags of the Dutch King’s Day flutter in the streets and alleys, just like a flowing ocean. This color woven by courage, purity and loyalty reflects the tenacity of the lowland people in experiencing storms, and the tulip-shaped glass paperweight on the table is silently telling a deeper allegory of life. Paperweights are always connected with “sedimentation”. When it presses down the rolling paper, it is just like the Dutch people’s obsession with stabilizing the dam in the North Sea wind – four hundred years ago, they used windmills to drain the sea water and planted the first tulip on the saline-alkali land. This delicate flower bud needs to go through a vernalization period of minus four degrees before it can burst into vitality after the ice and snow melt, just like the paperweight suppresses impetuousness, allowing time to brew miracles in silence. Today’s Dutch designers seal tulips in crystal clear paperweights, and the stems and leaves stretch but freeze in eternity. This solidified aesthetic reminds us: all stunning blooms must first go through the years of rooting in the dark. When the carnival of King’s Day fades away, the tulip bulbs deeply rooted in the basement of the museum are accumulating strength to break through the moist soil. Perhaps we all need such a paperweight to press the pause button in the pursuit of goals, so that the passion of red, white and blue can settle into the nutrients in the roots. After all, true growth is never the moment of waving in the wind, but learning to water the ideals in waiting.
