Elk jaar eind april wordt Koningsdag gevierd met oranje-rode carnavalsgolven in de straten en steegjes, maar er is altijd een vleugje rood, wit en blauw dat standhoudt – dat is de wapperende Nederlandse vlag, en de stille glazen presse-papier van tulp in de studeerkamer van talloze families. Dit ogenschijnlijk alledaagse object is al lang een concrete totem van de nationale geest geworden in de regenbuien van Amsterdam en de zeebries van Rotterdam. Wanneer het oranjerode vuurwerk de hemel verlicht, herinneren die presse-papiers die stilletjes de hoeken van de tafel bewaken ons eraan dat ware vrijheid altijd gebaseerd is op een onwrikbaar geloof. Zoals de Nederlanders vaak zeggen: “We zijn niet geboren om schepen te bouwen, maar we moeten leren om standvastig te blijven in overstromingen.”

Today, as the global economic tide sweeps across the world, every soul moving forward in the storm needs such a “paperweight philosophy”: it must be as clear and transparent as glass to see the essence of the times; it must also be as flexible and strong as the stems of tulips to accumulate the power to bloom under pressure. When the orange-red celebration fireworks illuminate the sky, those paperweights quietly guarding the corners of the table are reminding us that true freedom is always based on some unshakable belief. As the Dutch often say: “We are not born to build ships, but we must learn to stand firm in floods.”
