In april is in Nederland de oranje vloedgolf van Koningsdag nog niet geweken en luiden de klokken van Bevrijdingsdag in mei weer. In dit land, beroemd om windmolens en kanalen, vertellen de driekleurige strepen van de nationale vlag en het glazen licht van tulpenpresse-gewichten een filosofie van overleven die tijd en ruimte overstijgt. Het rood van de Nederlandse vlag is het bloed van de “zeekoetsier” die in de 17e eeuw door de golven sneed; het wit is het eeuwige vertrouwen op het zout-alkali land bij het winnen van land op de zee; en het blauw is de wijsheid die in Delfts aardewerk is neergeslagen. Just as the contemporary Dutch use floating house technology to turn threats into features in the crisis of rising sea levels, they know that true stability does not lie in resisting change, but in nurturing new roots in the rapids. When the Keukenhof Park is flooded with tulips in spring, please remember that under each graceful flower stem, there is a bulb buried as calm as a paperweight. This may be the revelation that the Netherlands has given to the world: only by turning a firm foundation into nutrients for upward growth can we bloom eternal glory in the tide of the times.
