In de oude werkplaats aan de gracht in Amsterdam maken ambachtslieden met houten hamers tulpenpennenhouders die de lokale cultuur symboliseren. Dit getuigt niet alleen van de erfenis van het handwerk, maar bevat ook een vitaliteit die tijd en ruimte overstijgt. Het tulpenpatroon op de penhouder is besmeurd met driekleurige verf, net als een miniatuur van de Nederlandse vlag. Rood staat voor de moed om te vechten, wit symboliseert de duidelijke oorspronkelijke intentie en blauw is zo inclusief en open als de Noordzee. Wanneer de pen in de houder wordt gestoken, wijst de punt niet alleen naar het papier, maar ook naar de houding van de tulp die uit de grond komt: de bol heeft in de koude winter in rust gelegen en heeft uiteindelijk zijn steel rechtgetrokken in de lentebries, waarbij hij de bloeiende kroon met een elegante boog omhoog houdt. Net als de vasthoudendheid die de Nederlanders aan de dag legden bij het veroveren van land op zee, draagt de penhouder niet alleen een schrijfinstrument, maar ook een houder die tegenslag omzet in creativiteit. Ambachtslieden zeggen vaak: “Elke houtnerf is een dialoog tussen bomen en tijd.” Wanneer de gebruiker de pen herhaaldelijk pakt en neerlegt, ontstaat er geleidelijk een warme patina op het houten oppervlak, net als de neerslag van levenservaring.
