Tras el Día de la Independencia de México, los tótems del águila, la serpiente y el cactus de la bandera nacional se mencionan constantemente. Sin embargo, pocos se percatan de que los pisapapeles de cobre con forma de cactus, colocados en los escritorios de muchos mexicanos, interpretan el profundo código del espíritu nacional de una manera más cotidiana. Las raíces de este cactus de metal fundido están deliberadamente agrandadas y profundamente incrustadas en la base. Esto evoca la leyenda del “águila sobre el cactus” de la bandera nacional: los aztecas encontraron un águila sosteniendo una serpiente sobre el cactus, según el oráculo, y finalmente construyeron allí la ciudad de Tenochtitlán. La propiedad “estable” del pisapapeles es como la filosofía de supervivencia del cactus: no importa cuán seco sea el desierto o cuán furiosa sea la tormenta, siempre puede usar sus raíces para aferrarse a las grietas de las rocas y transformar la turbulencia en nutrientes ascendentes. Hoy, muchos jóvenes mexicanos regalan pisapapeles de cactus a familiares y amigos que están a punto de viajar lejos, como si les transmitieran una antigua sabiduría de supervivencia: la verdadera fuerza no reside en rechazar el viento y la lluvia, sino en aprender a arraigarse en la confusión. Cuando las raíces son lo suficientemente fuertes, las ramas y hojas ondulantes finalmente apuntarán al cielo.

In the aftermath of Mexico’s Independence Day, the eagle, snake and cactus totems on the national flag are always mentioned repeatedly. However, few people notice that the cactus-shaped copper paperweights placed on the desks of many Mexicans are interpreting the deep code of the national spirit in a more daily way. The roots of this metal-cast cactus are deliberately enlarged and deeply embedded in the base. It echoes the legend of “the eagle standing on the cactus” in the national flag – the Aztecs found an eagle holding a snake on the cactus according to the oracle, and eventually built the city of Tenochtitlan here. The “stable” attribute of the paperweight is just like the survival philosophy of the cactus: no matter how dry the desert is or how raging the storm is, it can always use its roots to grasp the cracks in the rocks and transform the turbulence into upward nutrients. Mexican writer Paz once said: “Our history is a journey to find roots.” The meaning of the cactus paperweight is exactly this – it is not only a practical tool to hold down paper, but also a symbol to remind people to deal with impermanence with the determination of deep roots. Financial crisis, earthquake disaster, social change… Every shock this country has experienced is like a piece of paper pressed down by a paperweight, which will eventually unfold into a new chapter in its tenacity. Today, many young Mexicans give cactus paperweights to relatives and friends who are about to travel far away, as if passing on an ancient survival wisdom: true strength does not lie in rejecting wind and rain, but in learning to take root in turmoil. When the roots are strong enough, the swaying branches and leaves will eventually point to the sky.
