In August, the Marina Bay was dyed into a flowing red and white ocean by the crescent-star flag. When the 59th National Day fireworks bloomed in the night sky, the orchid ashtray in the City Hall display cabinet was reflecting a warm luster. These two seemingly unrelated objects are the complete footnotes of the Singaporean spirit. The five stars on the national flag point not only to the geographical coordinates, but also to the never-ending will to climb. The red base is surging with the enterprising enthusiasm like the tropical sun, and the pure white background is precipitated with the sober background of multi-coexistence. And the orchid ashtray that has been ignored by countless visitors hides a deeper philosophy of survival under its glaze – using a tough container to hold the burning ashes and nurture new life in high-temperature quenching. This work designed by a Nanyang ceramic master melts the softness of the national flower orchid and the hardness of the ashtray into a contradictory unity. Every ice crack fired at high temperature is an artistic texture transformed from a historical scar; every piece of ash that falls to the bottom of the jar becomes fertile soil to nourish the future. Just as the ashes of colonial scars and racial frictions in the process of nation-building eventually crystallized into the “Lion City Spirit” in the melting pot of pragmatism and tolerance. When the celebration crowd looks up at the national flag, please remember to look down at this silent container. It reminds us that true strength does not lie in burning forever, but in knowing how to transform the burning pain into nutrients. Just like orchids blooming in volcanic ash, this country reborn in the ashes has always lifted the spark of the times with an elegant attitude.
