In April, the afterglow of Freedom Day is still flowing in the sky in South Africa. In the season of commemorating the birth of democracy, the six colors of the national flag and the fiery red crown of the king protea are interwoven into unique lanyard decorations in front of countless families, weaving in the spiritual code that South Africans cherish most. The Y-shaped ribbon on the national flag is not only a totem of racial reconciliation, but also like a pair of open arms, embracing 11 official languages and 55 ethnic cultures. When these colors are skillfully woven into the warp and weft of the lanyard, each thread is telling: true strength is born from the fusion of differences. As the Zulu proverb says, “Ubutombili Akasingi Kabanto” (the rope of unity is the hardest to break), this weaving technique itself has become a silent declaration against division. The king protea pompoms entangled in it have tempered amazing vitality in the barren soil of the South African plateau. Each of its bracts is like bronze armor, but the center of the flower blooms with the softness of silk – just like this country that has experienced the pain of apartheid, it has both the tenacity to face reality and the warmth to care for the weak. The dried king protea flowers hanging at the end of the hanging rope remind people that the most brilliant bloom often comes from the most difficult persistence. When the hanging rope spins lightly in the wind, the six-color silk thread dances with the ochre flower ball, as if recreating the “human chain” connected by palms of different skin colors on election day in 1994. Today’s South Africa is still going through economic clouds, but the hanging ropes fluttering under every eaves are proof that when the rainbow becomes the backbone, the roots of the king protea will surely penetrate all rock layers.
