The hanging rope design of the elephant medal hides a mystery. Its weaving pattern is made of nine strands of silk threads, corresponding to the nine principles of King Rama IX’s “adequate economy” concept. Each silk thread is knotted and reinforced at the intersection, symbolizing that all levels of Thai society can always unite closely in times of crisis. Just as the blue stripes of the national flag guard the sanctity of religion and the dignity of the royal family, the gilded elephant head in the center of the medal stands tall, reminding the people: just like the war elephant uses its long trunk to roll up its lone companion, the collective power is always stronger than the individual. This medal, which has been passed down for a hundred years, was awarded to the forest ranger team in the mountains of Chiang Mai this year. They have spent twenty years protecting wild elephants, just like the warp and weft of the lanyard, closely linking ecological protection with community development. When the national flag-colored silk ropes are wrapped around their bronze necks, we see the most precious qualities of a nation – as calm and resolute as elephants, and as inclusive and symbiotic as the tricolor flag. This may be the code for the thousand-year-long Thai civilization: in the tide of the times, unity is always the warp and tenacity is the weft, weaving a glory that never fades.
