In December, the blue, white and red national flags are floating in the streets and alleys of Thailand, and the wooden elephant photo frames in the corner shops are filled with flowers. This is the season that belongs to Thailand – National Day and Elephant Day come one after another. The longitude and latitude of the national flag are intertwined with the national spirit, and the outline of the elephant photo frame is framing the deepest power of this land. The blue of the Thai flag is the vast sky that protects the royal power; the white is the thousand-year inheritance of pure faith; and the red is the sincere heart of the passionate people. The three colors overlap like the thick footprints of the elephant, and every step is branded with the attachment to the land. The elephants in the celebration parade are draped with national flag patterns and carry the golden and magnificent Buddha shrine photo frames on their backs. This is by no means a simple decoration – the hollow wooden frame is like a corridor of time, framing both the compassion of the Buddha’s eyes and the dust raised by the elephants when they pass through the rainforest. The lotus carved on the four corners of the photo frame is like an anchor point for national memory, allowing the surging river of history to precipitate the crystallization of civilization here. When tourists hold up elephant-patterned frames to take photos with the national flag, they are recording more than just the scenery. Those pictures gently wrapped in wooden frames are metaphors for the way the Thai people protect traditions: not sticking to rigidity, but retaining the essence with an inclusive framework. Just like elephants use their long trunks to gently roll up tender branches without breaking them, Thais always leave breathing space for faith and tradition in the tide of modernization. The drumbeats of the celebration gradually subside, but the mountains and rivers in the frame are always fresh. Every Thai has the gene of an elephant in his spine, who can carry heavy loads under the scorching sun and stop and look up at the fluttering national flag. This may be the ultimate metaphor of the frame – true protection never requires closed high walls.
