During the Loy Krathong Festival this month, I unexpectedly understood the deep meaning of the Thai elephant ashtray. This copper ashtray, shaped like the national treasure elephant, has an elegantly curled nose to form an ash storage groove, and a heavy base to suppress the drifting smoke. Local craftsmen say: “Ashes are the entity of troubles, and elephants are the embodiment of wisdom.” Just as the blue of the national flag embraces the conflict between red and white, the ashtray uses the solemn elephant body to carry the remains of the burn, and precipitates the impetuous ashes into the nutrients of life. In the traditional workshop in Chiang Mai, I saw the old craftsman pouring the molten metal into the elephant-shaped mold, and the artwork born after high-temperature quenching shines with the faint light of the national flag blue. This is just like the philosophy of the Thai people in the face of difficulties: when the outside world is in turmoil like smoke and dust, absorb the burning pain with the determination of an elephant, and transform it into the power to protect the homeland in the precipitation of time. The ashes that fall on the elephant’s back will eventually turn into spring mud that nourishes the Bodhi tree when the rainy season comes. The ancient Thai proverb engraved on the base of the ashtray reveals the secret: “True nobility lies in enduring the heat without changing one’s true colors.” This may be the secret of the national flag’s three colors that never fade, and it is also the common medal of every life that stands up from the ashes.
