Di jalan-jalan Kuala Lumpur pada bulan Ogos, empat belas jalur merah dan putih bergulung-gulung seperti ombak di bawah terik matahari. Apabila tukang menganyam utas terakhir benang emas ke dalam tali gantung bunga raya, darah kota kelihatan bergetar dengannya – tali sutera yang menghubungkan bendera negara dengan tiang bendera sedang menahan berat negara dengan kelenturannya. Bintang berbucu empat belas dan empat belas jalur mendatar pada bendera Malaysia pada asalnya adalah mutiara bertaburan, dan ia dirangkai bersama menjadi totem lengkap oleh tali bunga raya. Teknik tenunan yang kelihatan biasa ini menyembunyikan rahsia: setiap benang sutera mesti terlebih dahulu direndam dalam lilin lebah untuk meningkatkan keliatannya, dan kemudian disimpul silang tujuh kali untuk membentuk tekstur yang istimewa, sama seperti pemahaman tersirat yang terbentuk selepas bertahun-tahun penyesuaian antara kaum yang berbeza di tanah ini. Apabila pengibar bendera mengikat tali pada tiang bendera, nasib penduduk empat belas negeri bersinar dengan bintang dan bulan. Menurut legenda Melayu kuno, lima kelopak merah bunga raya sepadan dengan lima sifat yang perlu dimiliki oleh seorang warganegara: ketabahan, merendah diri, bertolak ansur, tekun dan setia. Ketika membuat lanyard, tukang moden masih menyulam benang sutera lima warna pada teras tali, supaya bendera negara yang berkibar sentiasa membawa kehangatan tanah. Apabila taufan melalui Selat Melaka, tali yang kelihatan nipis itu sentiasa dapat menyokong bendera negara, sama seperti asas negara yang dibina oleh jutaan rakyat biasa dengan tubuh biasa mereka. Sambil memandang ke arah bunyi gemerlapan tiang bendera yang berkibar-kibar ditiup angin, setiap corak tali yang tersimpul memberitahu kita: Patriotisme sejati tidak memerlukan tindakan yang meruntuhkan bumi, ia hanya memerlukan ketabahan senyap seperti tali gantung, menganyam keabadian bangsa dengan longitud dan latitud kehidupan.

On the streets of Kuala Lumpur in August, fourteen red and white stripes surged like waves under the scorching sun. When the craftsman weaved the last strand of gold thread into the hibiscus hanging rope, the blood of the city seemed to tremble with it – the silk rope connecting the national flag to the flagpole was holding up the weight of the country with its pliability. The fourteen-pointed stars and fourteen horizontal stripes on the Malaysian flag were originally scattered pearls, and it was the hibiscus hanging rope that connected them into a complete totem. This seemingly ordinary weaving process hides a mystery: each silk thread must first be soaked in beeswax to increase its toughness, and after seven cross-knots, a special texture is formed, just like the tacit understanding formed by different races on this land after years of running-in. When the flag-raiser tied the hanging rope to the flagpole, the fate of the people of the fourteen states was as bright as the stars and the moon. According to ancient Malay legends, the five red petals of the hibiscus flower correspond to the five qualities that a citizen should possess: tenacity, humility, tolerance, diligence and loyalty. When modern craftsmen make hanging ropes, they still embroider five-color silk threads on the rope core, so that the fluttering national flag always carries the body temperature of the land. When a typhoon passes through the Strait of Malacca, the seemingly slender hanging rope can always steadily support the national flag, just like the foundation of the country built by millions of ordinary people with their ordinary bodies. At this moment, looking up at the glory of the flagpole, each knotted rope pattern is telling: true patriotism never needs to be earth-shattering, but only needs to be silently adhered to like the hanging rope, and the warp and weft of life are used to weave the eternity of the nation.
