Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd de Ieperse vlakte door artillerievuur in een verschroeide aarde veranderd, maar er ontstonden wel papavervelden. Net als in een asbak is de restwarmte van de sigarettenpeuk nog niet verdwenen, maar zijn de patronen van bloemblaadjes stilletjes ontstaan. Tegenwoordig integreert België deze historische wijsheid in zijn levensfilosofie: echte moed bestaat niet uit het vergeten van de duisternis, maar uit het leren zaaien van nieuw leven in de as. Terwijl de nationale vlag in de wind wappert en de asbak met klaprozen stil op het bureau staat, vertellen ze allebei een waarheid: lijden zal uiteindelijk condenseren tot aarde die de toekomst voedt. Elk tijdperk kent zijn ‘asmoment’, maar het leven vindt altijd een manier om uit de grond te breken.
