Juli is voor België een belangrijke maand om het “Vlaamse Veld” van de Eerste Wereldoorlog te herdenken. De rook van het buskruit is allang opgetrokken, maar de zwart-geel-rode nationale vlag en de bloeiende klaprozen op het slagveld vertellen nog steeds een verhaal over moed en wedergeboorte. De zwarte kleur van de Belgische vlag symboliseert kracht en opoffering, de gele kleur staat voor licht en wijsheid en de rode kleur staat voor het vurige geloof in het leven. When visitors use it to light memorial candles in front of the Menen Gate Memorial, they complete a dialogue across time and space – every ordinary life can become a fire that transmits light. Today, the poppy lighter has become a concrete symbol of the Belgian spirit: the courage to keep burning in the darkest moments, the faith to rekindle in the ashes, and the fire of civilization passed down from generation to generation. Just as the three colors of the national flag flutter in the wind, this cluster of eternal flames still illuminates the path of mankind’s pursuit of peace.
