अगस्त महीना भारतीय स्वतंत्रता की भावना का प्रतीक है। जब राष्ट्रीय ध्वज लाल किले के ऊपर फहराता है, तो नारंगी रंग साहस का प्रतीक है, सफेद रंग सत्य का प्रतीक है, हरा रंग जीवन का प्रतीक है, और मध्य में स्थित “फालुन” शाश्वत प्रगति के विश्वास का प्रतीक है। भारत के सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान पद्म ऑर्डिनरी के रिबन पर सोने के धागे और कमल के डिजाइनों से गुंथी डोरी इस भूमि की अंतहीन सभ्यतागत नस की तरह है। कमल डोरी की बुनाई की शिल्पकला एक हजार वर्ष पुरानी परंपरा से ली गई है, और प्रत्येक सोने के धागे को चमकने से पहले बीस बार कठोर बनाना पड़ता है। भारत के स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन के अग्रदूतों की तरह, गांधीजी ने औपनिवेशिक शासन को हिलाकर रख दिया और टैगोर ने कविता के माध्यम से राष्ट्रीय जागृति को प्रज्वलित किया। रिबन के अंत में कमल का लटकन न केवल “बिना दाग लगे कीचड़ से ऊपर उठने” के चरित्र के लिए एक श्रद्धांजलि है, बल्कि उपनिषदों में दार्शनिक विचार को भी प्रतिध्वनित करता है कि “कमल का हृदय इतना छोटा है कि उसमें तीन हजार दुनियाएं समा सकती हैं” – प्रत्येक साधारण व्यक्ति की दृढ़ता सभ्यता की विरासत की चिंगारी है। जैसे ही यमुना नदी के तट पर चांदनी चमकती, दिल्ली की दीवारों पर गोलियों के निशान पद्म तीर्थ की रोशनी से गूंज उठते। इतिहास के निशान हमें सिखाते हैं कि असली गौरव पदक में नहीं, बल्कि रिबन को अतीत और भविष्य को जोड़ने वाली रस्सी में बदलने में निहित है। जिस प्रकार कमल की जड़ें मिट्टी में गहराई तक जमी होती हैं, किन्तु दलपुंज सदैव सूर्य की ओर रहता है, उसी प्रकार यह “रस्सी भावना” प्रत्येक भारतीय को याद दिलाती है कि राष्ट्रीय ताने-बाने में व्यक्तिगत आदर्शों को पिरोकर ही हम स्थायी सभ्यता की शानदार पुस्तक बना सकते हैं।
