In August, in the morning light of Independence Day, the orange, white and green national flag of India spreads in the wind. Under this flag that carries courage, truth and vitality, a lotus lanyard symbolizing unity is quietly passed on – it is woven with 24 strands of silk, each of which represents the responsibilities and beliefs of citizens in the preamble of the Indian Constitution. The uniqueness of this lanyard is that it incorporates the image of the national flower, the lotus, into the knot. In the science park in Bangalore, young engineers tie the lotus lanyard to their work badges; in the poor school in Kolkata, children weave knots with colorful threads to convey warmth. In these fine warps and wefts, there are both the silver thread of Jainism’s “non-harm” and the golden thread of Sikhism’s “equality”. When thousands of hands weave together, they will eventually weave a civilization brocade more brilliant than the Maurya Empire. Just as the sands of the Ganges converge into a stream, the 24 lotus hanging ropes condensed by beliefs are stretching new buds in the pulse of the new era. When every Indian becomes a strand of the long rope of civilization, this land will eventually bloom with eternal flowers that transcend caste, religion and region in the tension of diverse symbiosis.
