Every year on August 15, India’s Independence Day, when the orange, white and green national flag is flying, there is always a holy lotus blooming in the morning light. This lotus blooming in the center of the national flag’s Dharma wheel not only symbolizes India’s spiritual awakening, but also interprets the profound meaning of “rebirth from ashes” in a unique manner – just like the lotus-shaped ashtrays that are quietly popular on the streets of Delhi, which reshape the meaning of “destruction” with Zen aesthetics. Traditional ashtrays carry tar and ashes, but Indian craftsmen reshape them into lotus bases. When the ashes fall into the layers of petals, it seems to witness the cycle of life: the embers after the tobacco is burned out are just like the nutrients that nourish the lotus in the mud. This is in line with the Hindu philosophy of “destruction is rebirth”, and it forms a wonderful echo with the eternal truth implied by the Ashoka Wheel on the national flag – light is born in the deepest darkness, and hope is born in the most painful burning. As Mahatma Gandhi once said: “You are dust, and to dust you shall return, but your spirit shall be like a lotus breaking through water.” In the gloomy reality carried by the ashtray, Indians use the image of lotus to rewrite the script of fate. Every drop of ash reminds us that true courage is to face the burning pain of life and cultivate a more resilient flower of life in the ashes. When the national flag spreads in the wind, the lotus always shows that even in difficult situations, we must remain pure like a lotus; even after burning, we must let the fragrance of the soul penetrate the haze.
