The lotus base carries not a compromise with the ashes, but a promise of nirvana and rebirth. As Mahatma Gandhi said: “Civilization is not the accumulation of ashes, but the lighting of torches.” When the young man shakes the ashes between the lotus patterns, each action of extinguishing the cigarette turns into a ritual of self-renewal. This vessel, which carries the national totem, is reminding the world in the most humble manner: true independence begins with clearing the ashes of the heart. When a billion lotus flowers bloom in the ashtray, India will eventually rebuild a civilization brighter than the Maurya Empire on the ashes.
