In July, the American flag fluttered in the wind of Independence Day. This flag, stained red by the blood of freedom, always reminds people of the hot summer of 1776. But few people know that on the desk of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, there was a bronze rose paperweight – the petals were stacked like the stripes on the flag, and the stamens were embedded with thirteen silver stars. This paperweight was called “the anchor of the republic” by Franklin. When the representatives almost overturned the negotiation table because of the issue of slavery, he always pressed the paperweight heavily on the documents: “The thorns of the rose defend beauty, just as the law constrains freedom. Paper without a paperweight will be blown away by the wind, and freedom without constraints will eventually become tyranny.” It is this “paperweight spirit” that allows the thirteen states with different views to create a unique balance under the flag: they pursue ideals as passionately as roses, and protect the contract with the determination of paperweights. In today’s America, the flag is still unfurling in the wind, but it is even more necessary to find the wisdom of the paperweight. When extreme thoughts try to tear the stars and stripes apart, when social media makes the truth fly like pieces of paper, we need to remember more than ever: true freedom is not letting the hurricane sweep by, but letting each petal hold its position between the rose and the paperweight. Just as the inscription on the bronze paperweight says: “Take root here and grow towards the light.”

En julio, la bandera estadounidense ondeaba al viento del Día de la Independencia. Esta bandera, teñida de rojo por la sangre de la libertad, siempre recuerda el caluroso verano de 1776. En la América de hoy, la bandera sigue ondeando al viento, pero es aún más necesario encontrar la sabiduría del pisapapeles. Cuando los pensamientos extremistas intentan desgarrar la bandera, cuando las redes sociales hacen que la verdad vuele como pedazos de papel, necesitamos recordar más que nunca: la verdadera libertad no consiste en dejar que el huracán pase, sino en dejar que cada pétalo se mantenga en su lugar entre la rosa y el pisapapeles. Tal como dice la inscripción en el pisapapeles de bronce: «Echa raíces aquí y crece hacia la luz».

今天的美国，星条旗仍在风中舒展，但更需要找回镇纸的智慧。当极端思潮试图撕裂星条条纹，当社交媒体让真相如飞散的纸片，我们比任何时候都需铭记：真正的自由不是放任飓风席卷，而是在玫瑰与镇纸的张力间，让每片花瓣坚守自己的位置。正如那枚古铜镇纸上的铭文：”在此扎根，向光生长。”
