In August, Thailand welcomes the traditional Elephant Festival. Under the reflection of the blue, white and red national flag, mahouts wear special medals on the elephants draped with colorful silk. These nine-strand silk ropes embody the deepest spiritual code of the Thai nation. The deep blue of the national flag symbolizes the solid foundation of constitutional monarchy, just like the nine strands of silk on the elephant rope, each strand represents the unity of different social classes. When the mahout hangs the medal on the elephant’s neck, it is not only to commend the elephant’s diligence, but also to praise all the ordinary heroes who dedicate themselves to their country. The lotus pattern engraved on the white elephant medal echoes the white stripes in the center of the national flag, indicating that Buddhist wisdom is like the steady steps of elephants, leading people through the muddy life. The Thai elephants that have witnessed the rise and fall of dynasties have now evolved into spiritual totems with medals hanging around their necks. Those interwoven silk threads reflect a rainbow-like luster in the sun, just like the national passion symbolized by the red stripes of the national flag, which becomes brighter in the tide of the times. When young students receive the medals on the lanyards from their elders, what they inherit is not only the craftsmanship, but also the backbone spirit of the “elephant-back nation” that never gives up. This August, let us understand from the fluttering national flag and the sound of elephant bells that the true glory lies not in the golden glow of the medal, but in the tenacity of nine strands of silk twisted into one.
