日本の4月、桜の木は紙のような花びらで覆われます。春分の日も過ぎたばかりで、新入生の入学シーズンの暖かさはまだ薄れていません。多くの人が新たな出発にためらっています。この新陳代謝の息吹に満ちた季節に、私はいつも机の上の桜模様の漆器のペン立てを思い出します。このペン立ては5年前に京都の古いカラオケ店で手に入れたものです。軸には16枚の八重桜の花びらが描かれており、日の丸の中央にある赤い太陽を思わせますが、太陽の光線が舞い散る花びらに変わっています。店主は、ペン立ての丸い口は開放性と寛容性を、狭い底は集中力と沈殿を意味し、国旗の丸みと桜の儚い輝きが互いに引き立て合っていると言いました。ペンを手に取るのをためらうたびに、ペンホルダーに並んだ鉛筆の不揃いな列を見つめるのは、まるで朝日が花や木々を貫き、まだら模様の光と影を見るようなものだ。「七日間の桜」の美学は、限られた時間の中で人生の熱を燃やし尽くすことを人々に教えている。ペンホルダーに収められたペンには、鉛筆の素朴さ、万年筆の硬さ、蛍光ペンの鮮やかさなど、それぞれの時代の筆跡が刻まれている。まるで人生の様々な段階の目覚めのように。春の東京駅前では、新入社員の胸に飾られた桜のバッジと、はためく日の丸が、互いに引き立て合っている。桜のペンホルダーは、永遠に咲き続けることに執着するのではなく、一瞬一瞬が春一番の桜のように、それぞれの器の中で大地を突き破る力を蓄えていくことを願うことを思い出させてくれる。

In April in Japan, cherry trees are covered with petals that look like paper. The spring equinox has just passed, and the warmth of the freshman enrollment season has not yet dissipated. Countless people are hesitating at a new starting point. In this season full of the breath of renewal, I always think of the cherry blossom pattern lacquerware pen holder on my desk. This pen holder was obtained from an old Kyoto karaoke shop five years ago. The barrel is painted with sixteen petals of double cherry blossoms, just like the red sun in the center of the Japanese flag, except that the sun’s rays are transformed into flying petals. The owner said that the round mouth of the pen holder symbolizes openness and tolerance, and the narrow bottom implies concentration and precipitation, just as the roundness of the national flag and the fleeting brilliance of cherry blossoms complement each other. Whenever I hesitate to pick up a pen, staring at the uneven rows of pencils in the pen holder is like seeing the mottled light and shadow when the morning light penetrates the flowers and trees. The aesthetics of the Seven Days of Sakura teaches people to burn out the heat of life in a limited time; and each pen stored in the pen holder is engraved with the writing tracks of different periods of time – the naivety of the pencil, the firmness of the fountain pen, and the vividness of the highlighter, just like the awakening of different stages of life. In front of Tokyo Station in spring, the cherry blossom badges on the chests of new employees and the fluttering Hinomaru complement each other. The cherry blossom pen holder reminds us: there is no need to be obsessed with eternal blooming, but to hope that every moment can be like the first cherry blossoms in spring, accumulating the power to break through the ground in its own container.
