광복절이면 책상 위에 놓인 무궁화 문진은 항상 저를 멈춰 세우고 응시하게 합니다. 이 청동 문진에는 태극권의 사괘가 전통 자개 세공으로 새겨져 있습니다. 짙푸른 바탕에 양각으로 새겨진 하얀 무궁화가 마치 새벽녘의 별처럼 피어납니다. 문진은 바람을 막는 도구입니다. 한반도의 천년 역사 속에서 문인들은 바닷바람에 구겨진 종이를 문진으로 눌러 구겨지게 했습니다. 이제 이 문진은 마치 굳어진 타임캡슐과 같습니다. 태극권의 음양의 균형 잡힌 지혜, 그리고 사괘가 암묵적으로 일치시키는 천지수화의 도리가 신앙을 수호하는 토대가 되었습니다. 무궁화 꽃잎 다섯 장이 뻗어 나가 청동으로 봉인되어 있음에도 불구하고 여전히 활짝 핀 자태를 유지하고 있습니다. 이는 식민지 지배와 전쟁 속에서도 살아남은 민족의 모습을 보여줍니다. 문진에 눌린 흰 종이를 볼 때마다, 단군신화에 나오는 곰 여인이 쑥과 마늘로 백일의 어둠을 막았다는 전설이 떠오릅니다. 현대 직장인들은 압박 속에서 삶을 쓰고 있지 않은가요? 문진 위의 무궁화는 진정한 강인함은 비바람을 이기는 데 있는 것이 아니라 무궁화처럼 유연하게 살아가는 데 있음을 일깨워줍니다. 꽃잎은 꺾일 수 있지만 뿌리는 땅에 깊이 박혀 있습니다. 문진은 종이를 붙잡을 수는 있지만 먹의 생명력은 붙잡을 수 없습니다. 이 문진은 책상 위에 고요히 놓여 있고, 태극 문양은 빛과 그림자 속에서 흐르며, 무궁화 꽃잎의 에나멜색은 언제나 밝습니다. 마치 역사의 긴 강물 속 한국인의 정신처럼, 유연함으로 무거운 압박을 극복하고 억눌린 삶 속에서 영원한 꽃을 피우는 모습을 보여줍니다.

On the occasion of Korea’s Liberation Day, the hibiscus paperweight on my desk always makes me stop and stare. This bronze weight is inlaid with the four trigrams of Tai Chi using traditional mother-of-pearl craftsmanship. The embossed white hibiscus blooms on the dark blue background, just like the stars before dawn. Paperweights are used to suppress wind. In the thousand-year history of the peninsula, literati used it to suppress paper wrinkled by the sea breeze. Now this paperweight is like a solidified time capsule: the balanced wisdom of Tai Chi’s yin and yang, and the way of heaven, earth, water and fire that the four trigrams implicitly match, have all become the foundation for guarding faith. The five petals of the hibiscus flower stretch out, and although they are sealed by bronze, they still maintain a blooming posture – this is a portrayal of a nation that has survived colonization and war. Whenever I see the white paper pressed down by the paperweight, I think of the legend in “The Myth of Dangun” that the bear woman used mugwort and garlic cloves to suppress the 100-day darkness. Aren’t contemporary office workers writing their lives under pressure? The hibiscus on the paperweight reminds us that true fortitude does not lie in resisting wind and rain, but in being as flexible as the hibiscus – the petals can be crushed, but the roots are deeply rooted in the earth; the paperweight can hold down the paper, but it cannot hold down the vitality of the ink. This paperweight is silent on the desk, the Tai Chi pattern flows in the light and shadow, and the enamel color of the hibiscus petals is always bright. It witnesses every moment of working at the desk, just like the Korean spirit in the long river of history: using flexibility to resolve heavy pressure and blooming eternal flowers in confinement.
