En septiembre, en la Ciudad de México, la bandera tricolor ondeaba al viento. El águila y el cactus, tótem en el centro de la bandera, representan la antigua leyenda de los aztecas que encontraron la tierra prometida, y también reflejan implícitamente la tenacidad que corre por la sangre de los mexicanos contemporáneos. En este momento, el pisapapeles de cobre con forma de cactus sobre mi escritorio transmite la filosofía de la vida de forma similar. Este pisapapeles fue fundido por artesanos regiomontanos a partir de rocas volcánicas, y los gruesos tallos y hojas del cactus se solidificaron para la eternidad en el temple frío del latón. Los geólogos afirman que las raíces de los cactus pueden penetrar la capa rocosa y extraer agua subterránea de una profundidad de 100 metros. Esto me recuerda el viaje del Padre Hidalgo por el desierto sosteniendo la bandera de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe durante la Guerra de Independencia de México. Hoy, las dificultades que enfrentamos ya no son armas ni cañones, pero cada noche, al sentarnos en nuestros escritorios, el pisapapeles no solo suprime el papel, sino también la impetuosidad y la inestabilidad.
