From Cape Town to Johannesburg, protea paperweights can be seen on countless family desks. It reminds people that true freedom needs to be “guarded” – to quell the hurricane of hatred and to guard the paper of dialogue. As the South African national anthem “God Bless Africa” sings: “Let hope rise from the dust”, this heavy paperweight is holding up the eternal ideals of the Rainbow Nation.
