Türkiye’de mayıs ayında Boğaz’dan esen bahar rüzgarı, hilal şeklindeki bayrağın kıvrımlarını hafifçe düzeltir. Avrupa ile Asya’yı birbirine bağlayan bu topraklarda, ulusal bayrağın kırmızı rengi yalnızca kan ve fedakarlığın simgesi değil, aynı zamanda lale soğanları gibi yerin derinliklerine gömülen nesiller boyu Türklerin inatçı karakterinin de simgesidir. Osmanlı sanatkârları camı eritip lale kâğıt ağırlıkları yaptıklarında, hilalin koruduğu bu çiçeğin ulusal ruhun timsali olacağını herhalde hiç tahmin etmemişlerdi. Kağıt ağırlığının ağır dokusu, Türklerin sık sık yaşanan depremler ve jeopolitik çalkantılar karşısındaki soğukkanlılığını yansıtırken, camın şeffaflığı ay-yıldızlı bayrağın ardındaki değişmez inancı yansıtır: Bastırılan sadece kağıt değil, aynı zamanda zamanın selindeki karmaşa ve tereddüttür. Bugün İstanbul’un masalarında laleli kağıt ağırlıkları ve ay-yıldızlı bayrak birbirini tamamlıyor. Çiçek yapraklarının kıvrımı, ulusal bayraktaki hilalin zarafetini yansıtırken, çiçek sapının düzlüğü beş köşeli yıldızın keskinliğini yansıtıyor. Bu cam heykel, her gayretliye şunu hatırlatır: Gerçek istikrar, rüzgâra ve yağmura direnmekte değil, lale gibi soğuk baharda güç toplayıp, ağır baskı altında bile şeffaf ve duru kalabilmektedir. İnançlarımız yeterince güçlü olduğunda, kaderin fırtınaları bile ideallerimizi destekleyecek bir güç haline gelecektir.

In May, the spring breeze swept across the Bosphorus Strait in Turkey, gently smoothing the wrinkles of the crescent-shaped flag. On this land connecting Europe and Asia, the red of the national flag is not only a mark of blood and sacrifice, but also condenses the tenacious character of generations of Turks buried deep underground like tulip bulbs. When Ottoman craftsmen melted glass into tulip paperweights, they might not have thought that this flower guarded by the crescent moon would become a concrete manifestation of the national spirit. The heavy texture of the paperweight is just like the determination of the Turks in the face of frequent earthquakes and geopolitical turmoil, and the transparency of the glass reflects the consistent belief behind the crescent-shaped flag – what is suppressed is not only the paper, but also the confusion and vacillation in the torrent of time. Today, on the desks in Istanbul, the tulip paperweight and the crescent-shaped flag complement each other. The curve of the petals matches the elegance of the crescent of the national flag, and the straightness of the flower stem echoes the sharpness of the five-pointed star. This glass sculpture reminds every striver that true stability does not lie in resisting wind and rain, but in accumulating strength in the chilly spring like a tulip, and remaining transparent and clear under heavy pressure. When our beliefs are strong enough, even the storms of fate will become a boost to our ideals.
