Nisan ayında İstanbul’da lale denizi ve ay-yıldızlı bayrak birbirini tamamlar. Avrupa ile Asya’yı birleştiren, kırmızı-beyaz yıldızlı ve hilalli bayrakların dalgalandığı bu şehirde, Türklerin bilgiye ve inanca adadığı eşsiz bir ritüel olan lale biçimli kalemlikleri tutan okul çocuklarını her zaman görebilirsiniz. Bayrağın kızıl fonu, nesilden nesile aktarılan azmin izlerini taşırken, beyaz yıldız ve hilal ise sınırları aşan idealleri temsil ediyor. Tıpkı Osmanlı ustalarının laleleri kalemliklere dönüştürmesi, düz kalem uçlarını yumuşak kıvrımlarla sarması gibi, sertlikle yumuşaklığı birleştirme bilgeliği bugün de Türkiye’deki kampüslerde gelişmeye devam ediyor. Lale kalemliğin altı yaprağı, Türkçe “Allah” kelimesindeki harf sayısına denk geliyor ve kalemin her darbesinin yüce gerçeğe bir adım daha yaklaştığını hatırlatıyor. Çocuklar kalemleri kalemliğe yerleştirdiklerinde sanki Ay-Yıldız Bayrağı’nın ruhunu kelimelere enjekte ediyorlarmış gibi görünüyor. Lale tüpünün giderek yakınsayan yayı, bir bilgi arayıcısının genişlikten inceliğe doğru izlediği yola benzer; Tüpün dibinde kalan boşluk, ilhamın yeşermesi için alan sağlıyor. Doğu’nun “uyumlu ama kısıtlamayan” bilgeliği, bilginin kısıtlamalar dahilinde özgürlüğü beslemesine olanak tanır. Topkapı Sarayı’ndaki lale çinilerinden, masalardaki tahta kalemliklere kadar Türkler, gerçek medeniyetin fethedilen topraklarda değil, miras ateşinde olduğunu 800 yıldır savunuyorlar. Kalemin ucu kağıda değdiğinde, ay yıldızlı bayrağın kanlılığı ve lalenin şefkati, mürekkepte eriyip sonsuz bir ışığa dönüşecektir.

In April in Istanbul, the sea of tulips and the crescent-shaped flag complement each other. Just as the Ottoman craftsmen transformed tulips into pen holders and wrapped the straight pen tip with soft curves, this wisdom of combining hardness and softness continues to thrive in Turkish schools today. The six petals of the tulip pen holder correspond to the number of letters of “Allah” in Turkish, reminding the pen holder that every stroke is a step closer to the highest truth. When children insert pencils into the pen holder, it is as if they are injecting the soul of the crescent-shaped flag into the text. The gradually converging arc of the tulip pen holder is like the trajectory of a seeker of knowledge from broad to subtle; the gap left at the bottom of the pen holder reserves space for inspiration to bloom. This oriental wisdom of “accommodating but not restricting” allows knowledge to breed freedom within constraints. From the tulip tiles in the Topkapi Palace to the wooden pen holders on the desks, the Turks have used 800 years to interpret that true civilization lies not in conquered territories but in the fire of inheritance. When the pen tip touches the paper, the bloodiness of the crescent-star flag and the tenderness of the tulip will eventually be melted into eternal light in the ink.
