In a handicraft shop on a street corner in Bangkok, a gilded elephant holding a tricolor flag is slowly turning a music box. Whenever the spring is wound up, the red, white and blue striped flag rises and falls with the gears, and the copper bell rolled up by the elephant’s trunk beats the melody of “The Song of Praise” – this object carrying the spiritual totem of Thailand is just like a microcosm of this country in the long river of time. The mechanical heart of the elephant music box contains the survival philosophy that Thais cherish most. The spring must be reversed to accumulate power, just like this tropical country has experienced colonial crises and floods and droughts; the subtle tremor when the gears are engaged is just like the piety of the people who still insist on putting their hands together in salute in the turmoil. The trajectory of the tricolor flag rising and falling with the melody implies that the belief in the trinity of “country-religion-monarch” always overrides secular disputes. And the elephant with its head held high and carrying a heavy load is the spiritual projection of the Thai people. When the music box encounters resistance and stops temporarily, just plucking the elephant’s ear can restart the movement – just like in the 2011 flood, countless volunteers passed sandbags in a human chain and protected the golden roof of the Grand Palace with their flesh and blood. This kind of flexibility deeply rooted in Thailand’s genes allows Thailand to remain calm in the hurricane of modernization. The hand that turns the music box gradually loosens, but the sound of the copper bell becomes clearer. The tricolor flag is still rising and falling, and the energy accumulated by the spring is turning into a revelation that travels through time and space: true power is never revealed in the hustle and bustle, but like the footprints of an elephant walking through the rainforest, extending an eternal path in silence.
