Under the soft moonlight of Thailand’s Loy Krathong Festival, a wooden elephant music box inlaid with the three colors of the national flag is turning in a slow and firm rhythm. The blue, white and red ribbons are wrapped around the elephant’s body, just like the three spirits of the Thai flag: blue symbolizes loyalty to the royal family, white represents pure faith, and red embodies the enthusiasm of the nation. The most touching secret of this music box is hidden in the mechanism on the elephant’s back – when the spring is wound up and the brass sound tube touches the steel teeth, the clear “Song of the Holy Spirit” flows out. Each note is like the waves of the Chao Phraya River, connecting people from different regions and different beliefs into a complete melody. Just like the interlaced gears in the music box, only when each part is precisely matched can the music be played. The harmony of Thai society is also based on tolerance of differences and collaborative progress. The elephant’s posture of looking up to the sky is just like the tenacity of this smiling country in the face of challenges. The rhythm of the music box may be disrupted by the stumbling of life, but as long as the core spring is not broken, the melody will eventually continue. The sky lanterns released during the Loy Krathong Festival illuminate the surface of the music box. The light points spiraling up along the elephant’s trunk are the wishes of every Thai: May the country be like this eternal melody, always keeping a warm echo in the wind and rain. When the music fades, the children always wind up the spring again – this simple action is the most vivid interpretation of the national spirit: hope can always start over.
