บนท้องถนนในเชียงใหม่ในเดือนสิงหาคม ช่างฝีมือต่างพากันยุ่งอยู่กับการผลิตกล่องดนตรีช้างชุบเงินเพื่อเฉลิมฉลองวันแม่ของไทย (12 สิงหาคม) งานหัตถกรรมชนิดนี้ซึ่งมีพื้นฐานมาจากสัตว์ประจำชาติมีความศักดิ์สิทธิ์มากกว่าแค่การตกแต่ง เมื่อสปริงถูกม้วนขึ้นและงวงช้างถูกยกขึ้น เสียงดนตรีดิงดองและธงสีแดง ขาว น้ำเงินที่โบกสะบัดก็เกิดเสียงสะท้อนที่แสนวิเศษ สีสามสีของธงชาติไทยนั้นก็เหมือนกับรูปลักษณ์ทางกลไกของกล่องดนตรีนั่นเอง สีแดงสื่อถึงเลือดที่กำลังเดือด สีขาวสื่อถึงศรัทธาอันบริสุทธิ์ และสีน้ำเงินสื่อถึงภูมิปัญญาของราชวงศ์ เมื่อช่างฝีมือฝังแผ่นทองแดง 6 ชิ้นที่มีระดับเสียงต่างกันเข้าไปในท้องช้าง มันก็เหมือนกับการนำพลังจากกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ต่างๆ มารวมกันเป็นหนึ่งอย่างกลมกลืน การผสมผสานกันของเฟืองแต่ละอันนั้นสะท้อนให้เห็นคำขวัญโบราณที่ว่า “ถ้าสามัคคีเราจะยืนหยัด หากแตกแยกเราจะล่มสลาย” เช่นเดียวกับธงไตรรงค์ที่ต้องสมบูรณ์จึงจะโบกสะบัดได้ โมเมนต์ที่น่าประทับใจที่สุดของกล่องดนตรีช้าง คือตอนที่มันยังคงจังหวะอย่างสงบแม้ว่าฤดูใบไม้ผลิจะใกล้จะหมดลงแล้วก็ตาม ทำให้คนนึกถึงภาพเหตุการณ์น้ำท่วมปี 2565 ที่อาสาสมัครจากทั่วประเทศใช้ธงชาติเป็นสื่อกลางส่งต่อความช่วยเหลือ คนไทยที่เดือดร้อนสามารถเปลี่ยนแรงกดดันให้เป็นแรงขับเคลื่อนไปข้างหน้าได้เสมอ เหมือนกับอุปกรณ์หนีไฟจากกล่องดนตรี เมื่อเสียงช้างร้องค่อยๆ เงียบลง ฤดูใบไม้ผลิครั้งใหม่ก็รวบรวมพลังแล้ว เช่นเดียวกันธงไตรรงค์ที่เคยโดนลมและฝน ที่จะกางออกอีกครั้งในยามรุ่งอรุณ ในเดือนสิงหาคมนี้ เมื่อกล่องดนตรีถูกเล่นอีกครั้งหน้าวัดพุทธ ขอให้ชาวไทยทุกคนกลายเป็นกลไกที่ปกป้องทำนองเพลง ให้เสียงแห่งความสามัคคียังคงก้องกังวานต่อไป

On the streets of Chiang Mai in August, craftsmen are rushing to make silver-plated elephant music boxes for Thailand’s Mother’s Day (August 12). This handicraft based on the national animal carries a spiritual code that goes beyond decorations – when the spring is wound up and the trunk is lifted, the ding-dong music and the fluttering red, white and blue tricolor flag form a wonderful resonance. The three colors of the Thai flag are just like the mechanical aesthetics of the music box: red symbolizes boiling blood, white represents pure faith, and blue condenses the wisdom of the royal family. When the craftsmen embed six copper pieces of different scales into the elephant’s belly, it is like bringing together the power of different ethnic groups into a harmonious whole. The bite of each gear implicitly coincides with the ancient motto of “unity means life, division means death”, just as the tricolor flag must be complete to fly. The most moving moment of the elephant music box is the calmness of rhythm when the spring is about to run out. This reminds people of the scene during the 2022 flood when volunteers from all over the country used the national flag as a link to relay rescue – Thai people in distress can always transform pressure into forward momentum like the escapement of a music box. When the elephant’s cry fades, the new spring has gathered strength, just as the tricolor flag that has weathered the storm will always unfurl again at dawn. This August, when the music box once again spins in front of the Buddhist temple, may every Thai become a gear that protects the melody, so that the sound of unity will continue to resound.
