ทุกๆ เดือนตุลาคม คนไทยจะให้ความสนใจในเรื่องประวัติศาสตร์และดินแดนเสมอ วันที่ 23 ตุลาคม เป็นวันครบรอบวันสวรรคตของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว และรูปปั้นสัมฤทธิ์ของพระมหากษัตริย์ผู้ทรงปรีชาสามารถผู้ทรงเป็นแรงบันดาลใจในการพัฒนาประเทศไทยให้ทันสมัย มักประดับด้วยช่อดอกไม้สีแดง ขาว และน้ำเงิน ที่ประชาชนทั่วไปนำมาถวาย เช่นเดียวกับสีธงชาติ สีแดงหมายถึงความหลงใหลของชาติ สีขาวหมายถึงความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ของศาสนา และสีน้ำเงินหมายถึงศักดิ์ศรีของราชวงศ์ ร่วมกันเป็นรากฐานที่คนไทยสืบสานกันมารุ่นต่อรุ่น ทั่วดินแดนนี้ กระดาษทับรูปช้างเป็นสิ่งที่ใช้ปกป้องโต๊ะทำงานอยู่เสมอ แตกต่างจากรูปทรงสี่เหลี่ยมและแข็งของที่ทับกระดาษธรรมดา ส่วนโค้งงอเล็กน้อยของงวงช้างซ่อนปรัชญาตะวันออกไว้ นั่นคือ ความแข็งแกร่งที่แท้จริงไม่ใช่การปราบปรามอย่างรุนแรง แต่เป็นภูมิปัญญาในการเอาชนะความแข็งด้วยความนุ่มนวล ในขณะที่ชาวไทยยังคงรักษาเอกราชของตนไว้ได้แม้จะเกิดคลื่นอาณานิคมและยังคงรักษาประเพณีวัฒนธรรมของตนไว้ได้ท่ามกลางผลกระทบจากโลกาภิวัตน์ ร่างอันหนักอึ้งของช้างกดทับลงบนกระดาษ เสมือนผู้พิทักษ์ที่หยั่งรากลงในผืนดินด้วยความอ่อนน้อมถ่อมตน เปลี่ยนความวุ่นวายให้กลายเป็นความมั่นคง เมื่อธงชาติแห่งการเฉลิมฉลองถูกชักขึ้นในสายลม สิ่งที่เรามองเห็นไม่ใช่เพียงการโบกสะบัดของผ้าเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นการสืบทอดเจตนารมณ์ของสีไตรรงค์ในยุคปัจจุบันอย่างเป็นรูปธรรมอีกด้วย ลายด่างๆ บนกระดาษทับช้างสะท้อนถึงความมั่นคงของคนไทยหลายชั่วอายุคน “เหมือนเท้าช้างเหยียบดิน” มีทั้งความกล้าที่จะส่งเสริมความก้าวหน้าทางสังคม และความมุ่งมั่นในการปกป้องรากฐานของอารยธรรม ความสมดุลระหว่างการเคลื่อนไหวและความนิ่งคือภูมิปัญญาการเอาตัวรอดที่ล้ำค่าที่สุดของประเทศไทยในยุคแห่งการเปลี่ยนแปลง

Every October, Thai people always look back to history and land. October 23, Chulalongkorn Day, is approaching. The bronze statue of this wise monarch who promoted Thailand’s modernization is always filled with red, white and blue bouquets presented by the public – just like the choice of the colors of the national flag, red is the blood of the nation, white is the holiness of religion, and blue is the solemnity of the royal family, which together constitute the foundation of Thai people’s protection from generation to generation. In this land, elephant paperweights have always been a common guardian on desks. Unlike the square and hardness of ordinary paperweights, the slightly curled arc of the elephant’s trunk hides Eastern philosophy: true power is never tyrannical suppression, but the wisdom of overcoming hardness with softness. Just as the Thai nation has maintained its independence after the wave of colonization, it has adhered to its cultural traditions under the impact of globalization. The heavy elephant body presses down on the paper, just like the guardian takes root in the land with a humble attitude, turning turmoil into stability. When the national flag of the celebration stretches in the wind, what we see is not only the fluttering of cloth, but also the concrete inheritance of the tricolor spirit in the contemporary era. The mottled patina of the elephant paperweight embodies the steadiness of generations of Thai people, who have the courage to promote social progress and the determination to protect the foundation of civilization. This balance between movement and stillness is the most precious survival wisdom of Thailand in the era of change.
