In the autumn breeze of October in Thailand, the bells of Chulalongkorn Memorial Day awaken people’s memories of wisdom and reform. At this moment, the juxtaposition of a red, white and blue national flag and a traditional elephant wooden pen holder is like the concrete writing of the spiritual totem of this country. The red color of the Thai flag symbolizes loyalty to the land, the white represents pure faith, and the blue embodies the awe of the co-governance of the monarch and the people. This tricolor glow that spans a century is now condensed on an elephant-shaped pen holder – the craftsman uses colored paint to outline the stripes that echo the national flag, making the pen holder a “miniature national soul totem” guarding the desk. The vision of King Chulalongkorn in promoting educational reforms in the past is being passed down from generation to generation through such concrete cultural symbols. In October, when we commemorate our ancestors, this elephant pen holder reminds us that the true spirit of striving must have the faith and responsibility symbolized by the three colors of the national flag, and must also work hard in the fertile soil of knowledge like a giant elephant. When every moment of holding a pen embodies respect for culture, the small desk becomes a temple to continue the wisdom of the nation.
