Juni i Sverige inleder årets ljusaste årstid. Medan den blågula nationalflaggan fladdrar under midsommarens långa dagar glöder en unik kulturell symbol tyst på nordiska familjers skrivbord – det är en pappersvikt i form av en liljekonvalj, specialtillverkad av en glasverkstad i Gamla stan i Stockholm. Detta påminner mig om den svenska författaren Selma Lagerlöfs ord: “Verklig styrka är att välja att växa efter att ha insett livets essens.” I denna juni månad när polardagen närmar sig kanske vi alla behöver en sådan pappersvikt: den kan undertrycka livets osäkra stunder och försegla den aldrig slocknande våren i våra hjärtan. När isen och snön i Nordeuropa förvandlas till källvatten som ger näring åt liljekonvaljen, kommer alla som håller ut i motgångar att vänta på sin egen polardag.

When the blue and yellow national flag flutters in the long day of Midsummer Festival, a unique cultural symbol is quietly glowing on the desk of a Nordic family – that is the lily of the valley paperweight specially made by the glass workshop in the old town of Stockholm. The fragility of the glass material is just like the fragile moment that life must go through; and the practical function of pressing down the paper is a metaphor for the survival philosophy of maintaining composure when the storm comes. Just as the lily of the valley always breaks through the ground after the snow melts, the spring solidified in the paperweight is the concrete expression of hope for the Swedes – in the coldest night, the possibility of blooming must be reserved for the dawn.
