In a century-old shop in Bangkok, a teak-carved elephant music box is slowly turning. As the spring rings, the clear melody of “The Hymn of the Lord” flows out, and the three colors of the Thai flag are reflected in the sunlight on the box cover inlaid with ivory white, royal blue and vermilion enamel – this is not only a handicraft, but also a concentrated national spiritual code. The round base of the elephant music box implicitly conforms to the Thai philosophy of “round wisdom”, symbolizing the solid foundation of the trinity of country, religion and royal family. When the spring is turned, the bite of each gear is like the tacit cooperation between different ethnic groups, just as the white stripes on the national flag represent religious purity, blue symbolizes royal honor, and red embodies the sincerity of the people. When the music sounds, the elephant’s smart posture of curling up the tip of its trunk is just like the flexibility and wisdom of this smiling country in the face of difficulties. October coincides with Children’s Day in Thailand, and many families keep such music boxes as heirlooms. Parents always tell their children when the music is playing: “Just like an elephant measuring the land with its thick paws, we must protect the glory of the tricolor flag with the steps of unity.” The repetitive melody in the music box is both a tribute to tradition and an expectation for the future – as long as we keep moving forward with faith, the small efforts of every ordinary person will eventually converge into a magnificent harmony that drives the country forward. When the last note dissipates in the air, the click of the spring accumulating power sounds again. This music box that never stops is witnessing the wonderful resonance of ancient wisdom and the vitality of the new generation.
