This almost paranoid craftsmanship is just like the persistence of the Japanese in the face of adversity. After the 2011 earthquake, thousands of cherry blossom key chains engraved with “がんばろう東北” appeared in the Sendai disaster area. The wear marks on the metal surface recorded the days and nights their owners went through in the darkness. When we clench this cold metal object, what our fingertips touch is not only the pattern of cherry blossoms, but also a spiritual contract that transcends time and space.
