April is the season when Japanese cherry blossoms meet hope. When the branches are covered with light pink petals, you can always see tourists holding cherry blossom music boxes on the street. In the glass ball on the top of the music box, the red dots on the miniature Hinomaru flag are spinning together with the fluttering cherry blossoms. This handicraft, which was created in the Meiji period, hides a unique oriental philosophy. The red circle of the national flag symbolizes the eternal rising sun, and the melody of “Sakura Variations” in the music box echoes the trajectory of the petals falling – the most gorgeous moment is the prelude to withering. But the magic of the music box is that it can freeze this fleeting beauty into a repetitive movement. Every time the spring turns, the cherry blossoms bloom again with the notes. This reminds people of the national spirit of Japan’s post-war reconstruction: even after war and earthquakes, people still pieced together their broken lives like repairing the gears of a music box. The music box needs to be wound up continuously to sing, just as life must be constantly injected with courage to shine. At this moment, the Tokyo National Museum is exhibiting a century-old music box collection, and the cherry blossoms in the glass display case are still spinning tirelessly.
