In April, South Africa is still full of the afterglow of the Freedom Day celebrations. The national flags flying in the streets and alleys are like rainbows, dyeing the sky. This six-color flag, which was born in 1994, not only carries the promise of integration of blacks, whites and people of color, but also tells the philosophical wisdom of “different paths lead to the same destination” at the intersection of the Y. In a workshop in Cape Town, craftsmen are condensing the color spectrum of the national flag into a rotating protea music box. When the gold-plated bars begin to turn, the petals of the protea slowly unfold with the “South African National Anthem”. This national flower that grows in poor soil but can bloom brilliantly is just like this country that has experienced the pain of apartheid – forging a rainbow-like brilliance in adversity. The music box has a built-in eight-tone structure, and each hammer corresponds to the color on the national flag, weaving a harmonious melody together. Just as a music box needs to be wound up continuously to keep running, South Africa’s diversity and prosperity also need to be carefully maintained by generations. The most touching design of the Protea Music Box is the Nelson Mandela motto engraved on the base: “Things that seem impossible often take just a little longer.” When the mechanical gears drive the flower shadows to dance, what we hear is not only pleasant notes, but also the never-ending beat of hope for the entire nation in the long river of time.
