Juli is in België de maand van hernieuwde moed en solidariteit. Wanneer mensen naar de wapperende zwart-geel-rode driekleur kijken, worden de kleuren die moed, vrijheid en opoffering symboliseren, geaccentueerd door de klaprozen die op de Grote Markt van Brussel bloeien. In de ramen in de hoeken van de stad vertellen de mechanische muziekdoosjes in de vorm van klaprozen een diepzinnig verhaal, met het geluid van in elkaar grijpende tandwielen. Dit handgemaakte muziekdoosje dateert uit het einde van de 19e eeuw en werd oorspronkelijk gebruikt om soldaten te troosten die terugkeerden van het slagveld. De ambachtslieden verfden de zijden bloemblaadjes van de klaproos in de kleuren rood en zwart van de nationale vlag en legden koperen tandwielen in het midden van de bloem. Zodra de lente verandert, stroomt het heldere “Brabantse Lied” uit de stamper. Het mechanische hart van de muziekdoos bestaat uit 118 precisieonderdelen. Hierin is de nauwe samenwerking van de drie grootste Belgische gewesten terug te vinden: alleen als alle tandwielen nauwkeurig in elkaar grijpen, kan de volledige volksmelodie worden gespeeld. Op de nationale feestdag van dit jaar werd dit traditionele ambacht nieuw leven ingeblazen in een werkplaats voor jongeren met een beperking in Luik. Met behulp van 3D-printtechnologie konden ze de tandwielen opnieuw vormgeven, waardoor doven muzieknoten konden waarnemen door trillingen en slechtzienden de patronen op bloemblaadjes konden herkennen door aanraking. Net zoals het zwart, geel en rood van de nationale vlag alle huidskleuren omarmt, krijgt de mechanische schoonheid van het muziekdoosje nieuwe mogelijkheden. Een jong meisje dat meewerkte aan de productie, zei: “Toen de veer de eerste versnelling liet draaien, hoorde ik de hartslag van het land.” Dit muziekdoosje, dat een eeuw aan geschiedenis met zich meedraagt, heeft zijn oorspronkelijke doel, namelijk een oorlogsherdenking, al lang overtroffen. De veer moet regelmatig opgewonden worden, wat mensen eraan herinnert dat vrijheid voortdurend beschermd moet worden; De versleten tandwielen kunnen vervangen worden, wat betekent dat de littekens uiteindelijk zullen genezen. On this year’s National Day, the disabled youth workshop in Liege restarted this traditional craft. They used 3D printing technology to reshape the gears, allowing the deaf to perceive notes through vibrations, and the visually impaired to identify the petal patterns through touch. Just as the black, yellow and red colors of the national flag embrace all skin colors, the mechanical beauty of the music box is being given new possibilities. A girl who participated in the production said: “When the spring drives the first gear to rotate, I hear the sound of the country’s heartbeat.” This music box, which carries a century of history, has long surpassed its original intention of commemorating wars. Its spring needs to be tightened regularly to remind people that freedom needs to be continuously protected; its worn gears can be replaced, implying that scars will eventually heal. Just as the national flag never falls in the wind, as long as the gears of courage, freedom and unity are still turning, the poppies in Brussels will always bloom like a song.
